Clackamas Mall Oregon Shooting and My Opinion

The recent shooting at the mall in Clackamas County, Oregon this week is outright shocking to me.  During the afternoon, a leisurely stroll in the mall, perhaps window shopping while a heart melts at the sight of the holiday mall decorations of snowmen, trees, ornaments, teddy bears, Elves, even watching Santa and the excited children, all of it gloriously timed with the classic holiday music....a broken social engagement and promise of safety is shattered? I am- still- in shock at this thought.  I live half a mile from an indoor mall.  I consider it a safe zone.  Why?  I am lured there with food, drink, great discounts, all things that sparkle and shine and smell new.  All things that make me laugh, make me look good and feel good, that's why I am lured there.  I allow myself to feel safe. Among the enclosed walls, happy sales associates, many colors that are soothing and fragrances pumped into the airways, I feel wrapped in warmth and coziness.  I remember a time, while living in California, indoor malls were new, and as I grew up when they became legendary, I always felt happy, safe, and could never get enough of them.  It's not always about the shopping.  It is about THE EXPERIENCE of all the sights and sounds of a safe and happy place--particularly because I first had these experiences when I was young..

But now, this shooting--although there has been others-- all of a sudden, this one incident bothered me.  Is it the Christmas decorations?  the music?  was it the children standing in line waiting for the chance to talk to Santa?  I realized tonight while watching the continuous news media piece together the lives, the souls lost, the customers' stories who call in to tell their nightmares....I wonder if I can declare a mall a safe place to be any longer? I wasn't even there....just think of the people and particularly--the children--who experienced this nightmare at Christmas, who had to walk out with their hands in the air, among the decorations and holiday music playing,  only to walk up to a SWAT holding a gun..the sight of them alone is a nightmare..when you are young, you might not know they are safe, after all, they ARE holding a gun.

We know the lost souls will never come back and their families are living horrible loss.  We know the young man who took their lives is gone and his family is feeling a loss as well.  What we don't know is the impact the living will have as their lives move forward after this tragedy.  We do not know if this time next year, someone will have nightmares but won't know why--or that a mother will never allow her teenager to go to a mall again and can't explain why she worries herself until that teen comes home.

For me, I am in shock and I wasn't there; but it is enough for me to imagine the nightmare every time I go to the mall.  My hope and prayer is for the living of this tragedy.  For the families who have presents for their loved one under the Christmas tree, for the families who will have a plate set up at the table and there will be a missing person in the chair, for the children and others who will remain in shock for a very long time, perhaps their entire lives, my heart is only lightened by this one phone caller into the Jane Velez Mitchell show tonight, when after Ms. Mitchell asked, "did you think why is this world getting so horrible etc. (not verbatim) "  the caller responded, (Not verbatim)
"I would rather think of the heros that rose to the occasion. There was a man dressed all in black who ran over to me and my family and took us into the back room, got my kids candy and games and made sure they were feeling safe, then went back out.....there were so many people who actually, out of love of others, cared enough to help others, I would say I thought about how many people in this world actually spread their love during times like these and will help in any way, I'd like to think of those people and not of the bad in the world. I saw a lot of love"

Her words were poignant and worth remembering.  Her words and wisdom, with her voice still shaking, even today, guide me--and now you--to remember the loving, caring, heros, who stepped out into the face of danger due to their unconditional love of others....that is the abiding lesson that turned me around tonight.

I don't want to think about the bad in this world so much that it gets me depressed; I want to remember the unwavering courage and love from others who are in those malls, walking, strolling to the Christmas music, standing in line with their children waiting for Santa, all seemingly strangers...but all tied together in an instant should we need each other....and if I remember the young mother's words, I think I will feel safe again in a mall, or anywhere.

We are very blessed, we can feel safe, strangers can be good and spread unconditional love when needed, in an instant.

What Chocolate Covered Cherries Look Like In Las Vegas

Well, it's that time of year again, somewhere between thinking of our loved ones to thinking of ourselves!  I had a plan.  I really did.  The plan sat on my credenza for at least 1 week. I can honestly say I gave it my best.  BUT after a few trips to the local box super store and walking away from the goodies placed to the center, to my left, and to my right....and my strategic planning to put "Good Eats" on my Pinterest instead of my mouth.....I broke down.  So, this is what chocolate covered cherries look like in my house today:

Suffice it to say, this Christmas gift has been replaced.

and I hope my mother doesn't read this blog.

Buy early, items are exiting the building as fast as I can put them in a listing, new today:  a Sirius Satellite Radio, new in box, neighbor moving sale

Here's the storefront to my virtual store:

These two items will be listed in a few minutes....but for now, go ahead and browse the various departments for items all on 5% sale....except one item....

Happy Holidays, wish me luck on the candy canes decorating the tree........

Don't forget this little secret for Cyber Monday or anyday...

It's always Cyber Monday for me, or it's always Cyber Tuesday, Cyber Wednesday, etc.  A day doesn't go by without me blogging or commenting, advertising or twittering and even buying....I am ready for the huge onslaught of gift buyers and collectors adding to their collections, I am always ready, being a Cyber Monday or a Tired Tuesday.....here's a little secret I  want you to know...MAKE OFFERS to the small business selling online...like myself.
Before the weekend started, I was receiving "offers".  Because I am in the business to support my hobby of collecting Vintage glass, I must flip other items to sell.  Plain and simple.  I am not making a million dollars and I don't have a large power seller status, but I do want to make a sale, I am likely to counteroffer and then we settle with one more offer. Personally, I counter only once. When I first started to sell online and share my Vintage finds, I would forget to add the "make offer" status to every listing.....the smart buyers take the time, even if it is not in my listing, to send me an email and make an offer.  I am very glad they do as I am most likely to make a sale because they have set the price.  When I list, I can only make my best guess at what it might sell for, if someone comes along who says, "I would like that item but will only pay......." I am most likely to calculate my price out and let the item go.  *******SO, buyers remember: if you see something in a virtual store, anywhere, but especially Ebay, if there is an item you like but is much too high or the shipping is inordinate go ahead and MAKE THAT OFFER- it just might work!!  Sometime's those shipping calculations are guesstimates...again, MAKE ON OFFER to the seller....ask them to recalculate the price for your personal shipment....a credible seller should be able to do this for you and give you a solid price.  Sellers like myself, refund any shipping overcharges beyond the handling...regularly.  So, don't be afraid to MAKE OFFERS for both items and shipping to sellers.  Folks like myself depend on folks like you, good, honest, hard working, old fashioned bargain hunters...just like me...if I pay it forward to help you...someone will do the same for me....so, the secret is::::::on CYBER MONDAY and beyond...TRY TO MAKE AN OFFER and remember to have fun along the way....-=brenda  BWs Vintage Collectibles

Paying it Forward, Las Vegas Style...lol

This weekend, while winding my way through the streets in Henderson, getting lost time and again as the estate sale signs were wind blown and were mixed up with LAST WEEKEND's signs.....I noticed something vaguely familiar in my rear view mirror...a Cadillac...a black one....hhhhmmmm I wondered, it was following me!!! It did look familiar....As I turned a 3 pt turnabout, the fellow in the car behind me did it too!!!  Well, "...at least there was someone in this world dumber than me..."at least I wasn't the one FOLLOWING....I was leading, and somehow that put me above this guy who was intently following me.  As I finally found the sale, I parked far off because I felt I needed exercise...(later changing my mind)....I swooped up my toy poodle Peaches (big mistake taking her with me, she's so fat I almost killed myself trying to hold her for my leisurely walk-about) and proceeded to walk over to the sale.  I had forgotten about the Cadillac for the time being....but as I was trying to look strong and confident holding Peaches (she was gaining weight as I held her) ....THAT GUY walked in behind me...and stayed there.  THAT GUY...he was THAT SAME GUY that ripped the Hot Wheels out from under me about 2 months ago.....he was following me around another estate sale and when I came upon the Hot Wheels, he actually ripped them out from under me.....HE WAS THAT GUY...THAT GUY....where'd he come from ? I wondered....so, even though Peaches was like 50 lbs by then and squirming....I conducted my walk-about SLOWER.  THAT GUY just stayed right by me....so, I did what any red blooded middle-aged baby boomer woman born in Alaska would do.....I started to comment on every little thing as if I was going to buy....lol....what a dummy....he picked up stuff that was pure junk, nothing Vintage....and then....I walked about all that same stuff twice......yep.....even though Peaches was squirming and I was trying to be calm and cool...... THAT GUY was trying to one up me and trying to be patient...but he was trying to swipe stuff cause my hands were full of poodle.....lol....dummy.   (By that time both Peaches and I were really not liking each other)....so, eventually I walked back to the car....and then I noticed IT.....the Caddy following me....IT BELONGED TO THAT GUY......oh brother.....I laughed and got a good kick out of it....and boy, did I score with that estate sale...didn't buy anything but I sure had fun.

Gaza Strip Information Opinion out of Las Vegas

I wanted to understand what is going on with the Gaza strip.

It's complicated but I found a good source and it is unbiased.

Also, after studying the old Testament, I can see the religious aspects are also folded into the mess.

Every few years the middle east explodes and the rest of the world goes in and makes them sign a new settlement or treaty or agreement.
They shake hands and go play nicely for just a few years...only minimal strikes....when the UN isn't looking.....

I have no opinion on who is right or wrong.  I am only saddened for the children who didn't ask to be there or to stay after they were born.....

As a parent, I cannot understand how any person or parent cannot get on their feet and walk away, protecting their families from this continual fighting and slaughter.  I would walk away with a blanket in the middle of the night and do anything I could to leave this area far before fighting would be at my door.....

I wanted to pass this along to you all, in case you listen to the news or media to have an understanding of the history involved and how it relates to the current war zone.

Take care everyone...

Las Vegas Virtual Shopping, mom and pop

Shopping was never easier than this year!   Holidays can drag on and on and on, starting with the onset of Fall, way back in September!  Just one trip to the big box store on October 30, the day before Halloween, was confusing at best.   Displays had Christmas and Halloween together, and even had clearance sale shopping carts with Halloween things in them, the day BEFORE Halloween!  I don't know when the "shopping" time changed....I thought it waited until at LEAST November 1..?
But not any longer. bright displays with Holiday goodies and gifts take the stores front and center to send the message to consumers, "hurry up!  Buy now before it's all gone".  Folks like myself leave the store full of anxiety....perhaps I should have started my Christmas shopping in September?
Alas, rest easy, shopping can begin at home...with vast array of items to choose, you can cruise anywhere to any site and shop-- then have things delivered to your door.
Shopping at home will allow you to budget your gifts and relieve anxiety!  If you become a return customer to a particular store, look for discounts!  At the very least, you can order with confidence your items will be as described and they will arrive immediately.
BWs Vintage Collectibles is more than a Vintage Smalls Collectibles site.  Many of the items are brand new with tags.  The items are usually previous gifts given and the recipient never used them, putting them away in the closet.
Providing 100% money back guarantee items to be as described and in good order, 1 day handling and shipping, and a 14 day return policy guarantee, if you shop at BWs Vintage Collectibles, you will be contributing to a virtual mom and pop shop (my case, a mom and grandma shop)~~a local business owner with honest and credible service.  You will be able to confidently return each and every occasion.
**A local business owner who happens to be virtually modern, it is the new era.
If you bookmark your favorite sites and sellers, be sure to check for return customer discounts...BWs ' customers need only to send  a note or email to remind of their status (in case I miss it) and they can also subscribe to a bi-weekly newsletter....to receive a 2% discount on their orders over and above any current sale.
Relax, make your lists, shop in a virtual mom and pop shop this year; keep your business within the U.S.A. and contribute to the economy.  There is nothing better than having the holidays under control.  If we can't find anything to buy made in America, at least we can recycle items and we can buy in America!!!

Car Key Problems in Las Vegas...what not to do

It happened last Saturday (before this one).  I was running late to an estate sale.  I decided to stop by the bank and get some more cash...you know...I had a feeling I was going to need it for the sale....and I was so organized, I pulled up to the curve....walked over (no this bank does not have a drive-thru)...and got my cash.  I should say I finally got my cash...I was standing in line for a little while...with cash in hand, I scurried over to my car.  Hit the key fab to let myself in~~
nuthin.  nuthin happened.  I hit it again.  Still nuthin.  I physically tried to open the back door...nuthin but locked....I hit the key fab again.   I could hear the unlocking...and the beeping....but darn, the door just stayed locked.  I tried the doors again and again.  Locking unlocking locking unlocking....you can only imagine me standing there trying to figure out why (if the battery went dead) would the sounds of the locking and unlocking and beeping happen?  With cash in one hand (I was going to get to my car and stash it in my secret hiding place) my purse started to slip down my arm in hopelessness.....darn.  (actually, that's not what I really muttered) My mind started to race about where my auto insurance card was placed these days....I tried to unlock my car again and again...for seemed like an eternity.
What really bothered me was the beeping was coming from the other side of my car....that was so weird.  I started to try to unlock the door with my car key....final resort.  It just wasn't working at all.....I was totally frustrated.......then I had the idea that if the horn worked the trunk oughta work, so I tried to open the trunk.....my idea was to go through the trunk and crawl through the seats.....but to my despair, it didn't open...................I was about ready to cry and I was so embarrassed --I decided I really hated my car, only hating it mildly before this fiasco.....
I stupidly went back to listening to the horn.......and I walked around the car to the place where the horn was honking.........
lo and behold....it was the car next to my car!!!!!!
and it had the trunk wide open, all the lights were on, the horn was honking, the whole thing was blinking.....and then I flashed that I must have taken someone else's keys somehow.......look what I was doing to their car!!!!  Where are my keys?  I checked the ones in my hand...they seemed to be my keys......?
and then it occurred to me.......OMG.  I was trying to get into someone else's car the whole time....the car next to mine was actually MY CAR.......
Can you imagine someone in the bank watching this??????????
I mean, I stood there for like 10 minutes...before I figured it out.  No wonder the key fab didn't work, no wonder the trunk wouldn't open, no wonder the key wouldn't unlock it.....IT WASN"T MY CAR.
The really stupid part?  I didn't notice it wasn't my car for like 10 minutes or an eternity, whichever was longer....
I am never going back to that bank or pet store again.  And you can be darn sure NEXT time the key fab doesn't work, I'll be checking to see if I actually am at the right car......
geeeeesh..........and this was one of my good days.

Mandalay Bay Las Vegas Shoppes at the Palazzo

The fall season is here in the Las Vegas Valley.  The usual autumn trees are almost non-existent; however, what dots our desert in non-typical autumn colors are flowering Lantana, Bottle Brush bushes, various Cactus Prickly Pears, and yes, the devious yellow Ragweed....all tell locals fall is here.  Our days are still warm to most visitors; however, to the locals, it is cooling down, which means we get to spend time outdoors without melting.  We get to start moving around, visiting our casinos, museums, and shops.  To move from the house into a 135 degree car to drive 15 minutes to a shopping mall on the strip just doesn't have appeal until the fall.  I, for one, am very glad it is finally here.  One of the things I love to do in the fall is visit The Strip.  As a local, I can take my time, visit any day I choose, move in and out of shops, of parking garages, without sweating my makeup off.  Naturally, to get me in the mood, I pick up the newspaper.  Well, actually, I go to my computer and look up the recent articles.  What peaked my interest was an article about a cute shop called Bauman Rare Books located in the Shoppes at the Palazzo in the Mandalay Bay.  Apparently, they have created a small sectional display inside the store commemorating past U.S. Presidents! Of course, me being a Vintage and Antique enthusiast, I must attend to see for myself.  I will offer pictures if allowed, after my visit.  I would love to share with you US President's items and to share a little Antiquarian enlightenment.   Here's is the website I found if you would like to know more, perhaps would like to pick up a rare book or two........ maybe you will visit before I do and drop me a line!  I'll check back with ya'll later.......-=brenda    BWs Vintage Collectibles (and more!)

While I was checking out Bauman's, I linked The Shoppes at the Palazzo too, just in case you were wanting to line up a great shopping venue, either for locals or visitors!  The Shoppes at the Palazzo......when there you feel very important!!  very rich too.....love that place.

The Life of a Treasure Seeker in Las Vegas...

I can not believe it has been 12 days since my last blog.  Where the time went is a mystery to me.  I know I have been busy with social media which does not come naturally to me!  I have been blogging in my "The Vintage Village" Community, which is a great community full of like-minded folks, we all like Vintage anything. Antique anything, and even Mid-Century everything. I wrote regarding my adventures...but one in particular was and still is--heart warming......while my mind was completely bored the other day, and all the resting in the world for my toe gave way to extreme overeating.....I got myself out of the recliner and tried to get over to the CVS pharmacy....but on my way, I stopped at a moving sale....it was a hot day (I thought it was supposed to be cooling down here?) and I had limped out to the sale from my car, boot on for the broken toe and no makeup (please don't imagine that).  An elderly couple were in attendance....and as I picked things up, I noticed a demitasse cup and saucer from Noritake, it was about 1950....(I had tried to memorize the marks once)....and they noticed ME noticing the cups...a nice hand painted item with hand painted dragons, etc.  I spoke to them about various marks for Noritake, Occupied Japan versus Japan, the Tariff dates, etc.  We started talking about the Korean War!!   We all shared Korean War relative's stories and World War II as well....our stories took lots of time, I was there almost 1 1/2 hrs.  I shared my father's war stories and they shared theirs...we shared grandmother's heirlooms and cultures...we shared our adult children's ages and where we all came from (most all of us here in LV are transports from somewhere)....when I left, I didn't buy the Noritake but I did buy Roy Thomas Four Seasons Collector's Plates, never been opened to display...apparently, one of their departed mother's many collections of Vintage smalls.  I sprang for a very nice Napco Santa Waving on his Sleigh and is in excellent shape....but more than anything else I took away from our meeting was the idea that because I have a hobby to flip Vintage smalls, because I have chosen to educate myself for many years (over 30) of various manufacturers of fine porcelain and glass, because I have an interest in ALL things past history.....I have been able to be a blessing for those who want to share, for those who love the things they sell (usually heirlooms) and they have a need to share the stories that go with the items.....I have a sensitive heart and soul and would rather sit and listen to the stories all day long or half a day...or take down a phone number....to check on them later....and come home with nothing or an item no one would dream of coveting....than claim to be that lady that whooshes in, combs the tables, rips items out of other's hands, bumps someone out of the way, or even stealing items while a friend keeps the owner busy.....I would rather be someone who is remembered as taking the time to share, as a good human being, caring for their items and caring for their memories and souls....my hobby means so much more to me than just collecting Vintage smalls and showing them off....it is the stories I gather in my head that keep replaying in my mind for days and sometimes weeks....or months....Treasure seeking in Las Vegas is always interesting, but mostly, it is my secret of the desert to which keeps me passionate about who I can touch and how far God's blessings will take me for the day.......only those truly seeking can find these treasures.....P.S. I did finally make it to CVS.....

What NOT to do in Las Vegas.....

This is what NOT to do while walking down the stairs:  look at your cell phone and click lines over--it is possible you will land on the linoleum floor at the bottom of the stairs (phone still in hand though) with a broken toe.  Just sayin............on the good side, if this happens, you will have plenty of time to sit in your recliner and catch up on blogging..............-=brenda.....BWs Vintage Collectibles

Las Vegas: GONE WITH THE WIND

Whoa, and we thought when it rained for 12 hours two weeks ago that was IT for the rain this year....TONS of flooding around town...washed out gutters spanned all away across roads here and there...rocks everywhere...but boy was my car CLEAN!!!   Today, it poured AGAIN!!!   what's up with that anyway?  more water?  Personally, I am hoping Lake Mead will fill up again...those who know what it used to look like might agree with me.  This weekend we had heat...and clouds.....and the statement, "...it's a dry heat..." kept running through my head as I drove to various estate and large moving sales. The heat was moist, humid and relentless!  Dry heat?  not this summer!! On another note, most of my time this weekend was spent talking to people, comparing schools, cars, acquaintances, and local hot spots. Sometimes it is just as meaningful to take the time to visit and share stories with each other, to laugh at one's jokes, or to encourage someone when they reach out to connect with a stranger.  Treasure seeking Vintage and Mid-Century has allowed me to laugh a million more times, to store a million more stories, and to spread the love a million more times to a million more people.  Every person and every item has a story and deserves to be touched...spiritually and physically.  I love sharing what I experience with those who wish to read it.
A couple of fun things I found this weekend which are sure to fly out the door!!

Hard Rock Living it up Las Vegas

I wrote a blog last week about my kids (all grown but always have the same name, "kids") having a great time on the Strip.  Being local does have it's advantages!!!   It is so great to just drive 15 minutes and be in the middle of all the excitement.  I can see the strip from where I live, and every time I head to the post office, to the grocery store, or to Boulder City.  It is so great to go out Saturdays to the various Estate Sales and Moving sales and have the Strip in the background.  I'll have to show you some of my finds, but before I do that, check out (one of) the pools in the Hard Rock, Las Vegas.  My daughter snapped this pic a few days a go, in August.  Isn't it great?  And the room?  GREAT.  Only $79 a night, I missed the $49 special....darn.

Whah.  That's all I've got to say.  Ever been politely uninvited to the most happenin' place in Las Vegas?   Well.....I was.  Imagine this:  Family is in town.  Long lost daughter I gave up on for weeks because she never answers my texts....and her fiance...visiting, here, Henderson or Las Vegas (for most of you know that City so well).  Me, sitting at home, with full makeup and beautifully done hair...just waiting....and waiting...took a nap....and waited some more.   Text, I finally get one, my daughter and her fiance text and ask if I can pick them up and 'we' can go to Fremont, Old strip.   Me, excited, ready in less than 5 minutes and out the door..Don't care if it is 10:00pm......I pick them up, we get gas (that's a whole other story cause I have a locking gas cap....) and I drive the speed limit of 65mph the entire 15 miles...for me, is an eternity....laughing and having a great time, we cracks jokes like there is no tomorrow....Boy, how'd I get so lucky....me, anticipating fun...and funny, I don't feel my vintage age.....I drive them around the best wedding chapel on 4th and Gass, show them the drive-thru wedding menu...took pictures....as I drive a little closer to the Golden Nugget.....I kept talking about their new upgrades and the shark pool, etc....but I kept hearing in the back recesses of my mind....someone saying, "you can drop us off here"   "just drop us off here mom'   but while I was talking, I drove up to the ticket window and was issued a ticket....I was so excited..... and kept talking....but then....like out of a movie, a God like voice entered my ears and rang into my head....a woman's voice "mom, now you are going to have to pay for dropping us off!!  why did you do that?"     'You could have dropped us off at the door and saved money..."  then it hit me.......the "WE" in the text I received at home was "THEM" and I was pretty quick for a save as I said, "no way, I'm going with you!!"   well, after that volley of the ball hit the net, another play came at me, "mom, we're going to stay out really late, you won't want to be out that late..." and then came a spike that won a point, "Mom, of course if you want to stay out for 3 or 4 hours...." what could I do at that point? How embarrassing....so, I did what any uninvited gracious host and taxi cab driver would do, drove out of the parking lot (explained my error to the parking attendant who let me out for free) went over to the front door, and dropped off my "children"...my son was with them too.  It occurred to me, the new generation is up and running and I am gradually moving towards the middle....I guess I am Mid-Century.  I suppose it is fitting my favorite hobby of collecting small Vintage and Mid-Century smalls and putting them back into circulation has developed into something that keeps me so busy....I hardly gave it a thought that ALL my children were grown....when did that happen and how did that happen? So, the next morning my Mid-Century body was feeling well rested and ready to rock the estate sales.....while all the "kids" were nursing hangovers and unders.....heh heh heh....lol lol lol.......yep, my age is showing and boy, I need to send them all a 'thank you' for uninviting me to the party!!!!!   Whooooo, dodged a bullet there.  Come visit and see the fantastic finds this weekend!!   No estate sales, darn, but did make it to several moving sales.....have any youngsters and hate to pay the new prices on helmets, gloves, blades? come visit for great prices....buy early, Christmas is coming......visit my virtual store for lots of great things...

Las Vegas is poppin this time of year!

Las Vegas is poppin' this time of year!  One trip to the Strip to visit my nephew and his wife, reminds me how "lucky" I am.  My luck isn't a winnings from a Blackjack table or a Roulette wheel, or even from a Poker hand....my luck is a BLESSING my higher power (God) has given me.  Although my trip down to the strip strikes me as awesome every time I visit, I realize the wealth and volume of history this Valley holds in its hot lava flow from the Mirage or the hot but shaded Cabanas at the Bellagio is appreciated from a more personal and thankful heart.  For all the days I have are sometimes filled with limited physical accomplishments, I only need to remember one thing:   God put me here, in this place, to enjoy the warm weather, to view the magnificent Lantana landscaping and Palm trees, and to meet people from all walks of life, all cultures, countries, faiths, and personalities I never would have imagined to include in my daily life.   The blessings to be living in such a wonderful resort city is far more than I could or will ever be blessed with and I am so thankful to be here, no matter how hot it gets outside.  Each Friday and Saturday I explore estate sales and moving sales for vintage treasure,  it has always been a hobby of mine to do so.  Little did I imagine, almost 10 years ago, I would be able to combine my hobby with the meeting and sharing of so many people from so many walks of life.  My community is made of individuals and families who have come to Las Vegas to strike their fortunes, buy cheap homes, own property, to educate their children, to find 24/7 work.  The pace is set what you want it to be.  Today, when I am out and about treasure seeking for Vintage and Mid-century items to hold and admire, I will be extra blessed to talk with the people of my home.  The people coming and going, listening to them about their journeys and (hopefully) good fortunes....each piece of inventory I find holds a little piece of my meeting with the previous families....some items have been in a family for over 50 years, some pieces since high school days, some pieces have traveled (by covered wagon, lol) SUVs and vans to rest and retire...some pieces are deemed useless and discarded...but I always feel blessed to hold a precious coffee cup and saucer or to clean and polish a cobalt blue glass dish....to freshen up a lonely bear or to display the piece into my personal glass collection.  Las Vegas is a blessed place and is beautiful to me, not only for its pretty flashing lights and entertainment, but for the place I have been blessed to live.  Treasure hunting in the Las Vegas Valley has never meant more to me....for many many reasons.  Now, off to the hunting......

Las Vegas the place to be after finals

Yes, even though I live in the Las Vegas Valley, in a suburb actually, I do, occasionally, get over to the Strip.  The fantastic colors the neon signs produce are just mesmerizing.  Reds, blues, yellows, oranges, purples, greens.....extra large digital pictures of all the stars, comedians, dancers you can imagine ....the Bellagio water fountains spring forth, higher and higher, dancing to music, lulling the passer-bys into a hypnotic and peaceful happy place.  Just going to the downtown Fremont Street Experience is a treat, anytime, but especially at night.

While the Vintage street was protected and covered with an awning of LCD lights, the walk and subsequent light show on the awning is spectacular. As you walk down memory lane-now known as the Fremont Street Experience- or DOWNTOWN- to the locals....your mind imagines the simplicity of the pas: the buildings are Vintage, the neon lights are Vintage, and it compliments the updated entertainment venue perfectly....you can feel spirits roaming and enjoying the Experience too. Of course, Vintage is my passion, as I search every weekend for lost treasures that need to be cleaned and displayed....Items that need to be showcased and put into a cabinet....and items that need to be saved for our next generations.....1970s and 80s are now considered VINTAGE, although, I must admit, I find it difficult to label them as such.   I know, the youngster of today will someday have the desire to revisit America's past and hunt for these treasures....those items that are labeled frequently as "Mid-Century" will be labeled "true Vintage"  and will be highly collectible and set upon shelves and in cabinets.  When I visit the current Vegas Strip and become lulled by the Bellagio fountains and entertained with the Mirage overflowing Volcano, I almost always remember the Rat Pack, Marilyn, Lucille Ball, among a few, who vacationed here, laughed here, and stayed here. To think my Valley, my home- entertained the entertainers is in itself the epitome of remembrance....my treasure hunts, my cleaning, my photography means so much more as I share with the world items plucked from the homes and estates of fellow neighbors in this rich and magical place called--Las Vegas....it's more than a hot summer oasis in the desert and it is my home.  -=brenda

Whew, it rained in Las Vegas! Nice

Whew, and it's a good thing that it rained in Henderson, Las Vegas, and anywhere here in the desert.   I was on the verge of melting into my shoes this weekend while visiting estate sales.  When you get into your car and you burn the tips of your fingers to turn your steering wheel.....that's too hot.  When you get into your car and it doesn't cool off for 25 minutes....that's too hot.  The worst of it is when you finally break down and eat a chocolate bar....and it melts in your hands.....you remember you should have had a V8 or chosen M & Ms.  What I should have done was visit Ethel M's Chocolate Factory in Henderson and ate my candy INSIDE where there is air conditioning.  The past two weekends have not been very exciting here in the Las Vegas area for finding unique vintage treasure, but I did meet some wonderful people along the hunt.  I found the cutest plush bears, one of my favorites is the "Las Vegas" bear, he's all white holding a pillow that is embroidered, states "Las Vegas.."   ... Actually, one vintage couple followed me to every destination.  Every time I turned around, there they were, in the red truck...following me around the house/sale.....closer to me than my poodle at dinner time. If I picked up a Tuscan Landscape Pitcher, they'd pick it up after me...if I picked up a Rhinestone brooch, they'd be in the same box as I... I guess they thought I was the one to watch as I worked my way around delicate china and glass.  As soon as I made moves toward the door, they would follow me out and jump in their truck, and again, they'd show up at the next one....they did pretty good speed wise at driving for being that vintage age and all.... just don't know why we all didn't hitch rides together and save on gas.  Speaking of gas (for the car) I found a station in Henderson that charged $3.38 a gallon.  I was thrilled. I need to be riding a Harley, speaking of, see below Christmas "Letters to Santa" Harley Davidson rider ornament..... I digress......I spent the majority of the weekend putting additional items into my store, BWs Vintage Collectibles, stores.ebay.com/bwsvintagecollectibles...I am going to finish up adding all of my Vintage and Mid-century items this next week.
Be sure to check out this bear!!!!   -=brenda

It's SO HOT in Las Vegas. WHEW.

Whew and Wow, it's hot in the Las Vegas valley this week. Pretty normal though.  While at the post office yesterday mailing a Priority package to a buyer, I met a very nice lady and we talked for quite a while....in the shade.....we were comparing heat indexes.  My idea of hot in the car was when my fingertips burned when I put my hands on the steering wheel of my car....her idea of hot was when people stopped moving around.  I showed her my fingertips...she offered hand lotion to me, being as the little bottle was almost empty, I declined.  It's a perfect time of year to open a store in Ebay, BWs Vintage Collectibles.  My newest venue for Vintage and Mid-century estate collectibles.  Here's the new link!

stores.ebay.com/bwsvintagecollectibles

I attribute the opening of the new Ebay store to my dear Kansas friend, Bonnie, whom I met while purchasing on Ebay, but more importantly, she lives within 70 miles of my ancestry roots.  She is like family to me, I met her this May, and she is a great lady, working at an auction estate company, she is so knowledgeable of many things...but she is also a great mom.....!  She is definitely a 100% seller for many years and you should see what she is selling!

I will eventually get all of my Vintage and Mid-Century inventory listed on stores.ebay.com/bwsvintagecollectibles  even if I am sweating to do it, pardon the pun.....but right now, I am in over my ears with changing venues and heat indexes over the top....a nice resort style swimming pool might be the ticket today.....my vintage style body probably won't fit in a swim suit though.....maybe I"ll go when it gets dark..........  with a glass of wine.  I always fit better into a swimsuit after I've had some wine...I'll fill ya in on the details...or not.....-=brenda

Vintage Collectibles in Las Vegas over 20 yrs old

Good day.  And then I was reading again...about Vintage people...I call them Vintage rather than use the description, "Gray".  Anyone can be gray.  Matters of fact, there is a hair dye you can use to turn your hair gray if you choose...some people's hair never turns gray, it turns WHITE, as in my father's case....fine white and beautiful.......I digress......the article I was reading referred to "Gray drivers".  What the heck is that all about?  What does a gray driver look like?  I digress again....(this article was much too personal to me!). Supposedly, the "Baby Boomers" are aging.  Matters of fact, I didn't used to be a baby boomer, but the age perimeters changed and now I am one.  An analysis by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety shows a driver's risk-not only to herself -but also to others on the road- begins to increase about the age of 70 years of age.  By the age of 85, the drivers are two to three times more likely to die in a vehicular accident than a 16 to 17 yr old teen.  The article went on to state, fortunately, older drivers are more careful,  drive shorter distances, and by design don't go out as often due to being retired.  They don't drink and drive much.  Well, the only thing I can say about that is what about those Vintage people driving those huge motor homes around?  like huge crates of ammunition on wheels...slowly creeping along and swerving when they get a glimpse of the strip from atop N95 as it crests coming out of Boulder City....?   What about those Vintage people who take lots of prescription meds and need naps?  What's the AAA got to say about that?  All I've got to say is that I am glad I am not a "gray" person cause I tint my hair...I drive an economical car...and I take naps...so I don't get tired.....Vintage and living in Las Vegas, that's me.  Vintage is anything over 20 years old.  That's me.
Seriously, the article is lax.  (Not laxative)   The way I figure it, I'm a darn good driver...for any given day I am on the road...I dodge speeding fancy sports cars down the 215, rental car malfunctions in speed when pulling on to the 215 from the rental hub.....I stay out of the fast lane so the young guns can go by....I wave when I drive by them as they are getting their tickets....I don't tailgate (unless someone is from out of state)....I allow people to cross the street to get into Walmart (I can't say the teenagers stop for me when I need to cross the street to get into Walmart) and I only park in the handicap slots when I feel my Vintage age....I try not to cuss at teenagers who flip me off.....I think I'm a pretty good driver for my Vintage age of over 20 yrs. (description of Vintage.)  as long as I get my daily naps.....although, I am due for another hair tinting this week.....I sure hope I can find that cherished blue parking spot cause I feel really Vintage today....almost antique!   I am pretty sure the person who wrote the "Gray Drivers" article was just jealous cause "GRAY DRIVERS" get to park closer to the door at Walmart and GRAY HAIR does not have anything to do with the WAY I DRIVE.  hhhhhrrrrrrrmmmmmppphhhhh.   For more Vintage small collectibles, come visit my store!
